Your only limits are the ones you create

Nov 3, 2020 | Self-Help

We often limit ourselves without even realising it. Phrases like, “I can’t”, “because someone else”, “but” and “if only” are some of the things we tell ourselves that prevents us from reaching our next great milestone. What if we could change that? Let us have a deeper look.

What if you can live that dream?

Is what I am believing objective?

Often times we are so focused on our realities that we forget to take a step back and have a look at the bigger picture. Is what you want to achieve really that difficult? Did other people attempt this before? Do you believe it is possible? Alexander the Great said, “there is nothing impossible to him who tries”.

Is my heart in it?

I know, it’s not always easy to take a step back to see the bigger picture, sometimes we have to make a heart change first. Other times we can look at it objectively but as soon as we see ourselves in this big picture we lose hope. Ask yourself, do I really want to go further, reach higher and achieve my goals? Am I willing to do what it takes? If it was a bit painful to say yes to these questions, don’t worry, just keep reminding yourself that you said yes, ultimately your heart will follow. “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Martin Lurther King jr.

Emotion follows motion.

Just start, soon you will feel it.

Are you settling?

Often times we settle for less because we don’t see how or don’t believe we can. What if you could start believing in yourself? Robert Frost had a famous quote, “How many things would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?” Think about that question. If I give you fairy dust and tell you, this dust will make everything you attempt successful, what would you do? Would you choose less?

Take the first step

Since we’ve already established that other people have done it before you or that it is definitely possible, why is it so hard to just do it? Maybe we should all believe a little more, not in the fairy dust but in ourselves. Together with believing comes seeing, but most of the time we have to believe before we can see, and that is why you are reading this post in the first place. Luckily we all have this amazing ability to create, everyone in our own way. What image do you have in your head? What is your dream about? Colour it in and see all the details in it. See yourself in it. If you have no clue how to get there, good! Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said, if your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.

It all starts with a dream.

Make a statement

You don’t have to believe everything you tell yourself, yet. This will come with practice and repetition, but try to create a more physical image. Search for an image or images that will let you imagine that picture in your head. You can even draw it. Print it out and stick it on your vision wall where you can see it daily. On top of it write a statement as if that future image is a present fact and that it is part of you. For example, I am a world-renowned writer. The more you remind yourself of this statement, the more it will be a reality for you.

Dream

Albert Einstein said, “imagination is the highest form of research”. When things seem impossible, dream about it. Take some quiet time for yourself and see how it would look if it had to come to pass. See yourself in the dream. Something far and impossible becomes more real the longer we look at it. Imagine what you can gain!
